172.31.223.255 is the broadcast address of the 172.31.216.0/21 subnet, so the last usable ip in the range is 172.31.223.254. I'm not sure why your using a range. I'm using Chris Bryant's method to get subnetting, and he never talks about or uses a range. thanks. sawer4d slot
